Hong Kong Establishes Task Force in Thailand Amid Rising Concerns of Human Trafficking

The Hong Kong Security Bureau is sending a task force to Thailand to investigate cases of residents being lured into illegal work in Southeast Asia, following the alarming incident of actor Wang Xing, who was recently rescued from a human trafficking operation in Myanmar.

In response to increasing concerns regarding residents of Hong Kong being lured into illegal work in Southeast Asia, the Security Bureau has announced the dispatch of a task force to Thailand. This initiative stems from alarming incidents involving Hong Kong citizens, particularly the recent case of Wang Xing, a mainland Chinese actor who was held captive in Myanmar after being deceived by a fraudulent casting agent. The task force will investigate these cases further, aiming to offer support and ensure the safety of affected individuals.

As of now, Hong Kong law enforcement has documented 28 cases of residents reporting limitations on their freedom in Southeast Asian countries. Of these, 16 individuals have successfully returned to Hong Kong, while the remaining 12 continue to communicate with their families and the task force, although they also report restrictions on their movements. This increasing trend has alarmed authorities, prompting an urgent response to prevent further incidents from occurring.

The disturbing situation surrounding Wang Xing highlighted the risks faced by individuals traveling to the region. After his disappearance upon arrival in Thailand on January 3, it was revealed that Wang had been misled by a phony casting agent. Subsequent investigation by Thai authorities led to his rescue from a human trafficking operation in a city in Myanmar bordering Thailand, where he was ultimately returned to mainland China. This incident has sparked significant concern among the public in Hong Kong regarding the safety of its residents in Southeast Asia.
