Cameroon on the Brink of Another Biya Term: Questions of Leadership and Stability

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya may run for an eighth term, raising concerns due to his age and long rule. Despite some support for his candidacy, critics highlight the escalating civil conflicts and economic difficulties facing the nation, questioning the capability of the current leadership. The fragmented opposition struggles to present a viable alternative, leaving many citizens disillusioned with the political landscape.

As Cameroon approaches its upcoming elections, questions arise regarding 91-year-old President Paul Biya’s potential eighth consecutive term, which may make him Africa’s longest-serving ruler. Political commentator Dr. John Akpo asserts that there is no uncertainty about Biya’s candidacy despite health concerns. Biya’s party, the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM), is actively preparing for the 2025 elections, although some members remain vague on Biya’s plans.
