UDA Delegation’s Diplomatic Visit to Uganda to Strengthen Political Relations

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) of Kenya began a six-day visit to Uganda aiming to strengthen ties with the National Resistance Movement (NRM). On February 4, 2024, a delegation from Kenya’s ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) commenced a six-day official visit to Uganda. This initiative aims to strengthen political relations with Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). The delegation’s visit highlights a commitment to exchange political strategies and improve governance practices between the two nations, furthering their collaborative efforts within the East African Community.

Upon arrival at Entebbe Airport, UDA leaders were welcomed by Major Awich Pollar, NRM’s Director of External Affairs. Pollar expressed optimism regarding the potential benefits of this exchange, stating that both UDA and NRM possess valuable experiences and best practices to share. The meeting with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is intended to provide insights into the NRM’s historical milestones and ideological foundations.

Pollar emphasized the importance of collaboration, urging UDA and NRM to identify common goals and utilize each other’s strengths. According to NRM officials, both parties share a vision focused on enhancing citizens’ well-being and advocating for the political federation of East Africa. This burgeoning camaraderie has developed since UDA’s previous visit in October 2024 when they praised NRM’s resilience.

Joash Maangi, who participated in prior discussions, underscored the necessity of structured political collaboration amidst Kenya’s fluctuating political landscape. UDA Secretary General, Hassan Omar Hassan, commended NRM’s leadership as an exemplary model within African politics, acknowledging the importance of a collaborative political dynamic.

Nevertheless, UDA’s engagement with NRM has generated some controversy in Kenya. The internal discourse surrounding a proposal to extend President William Ruto’s term has elicited a diverse array of responses from the public and political figures. In spite of these domestic challenges, UDA is prioritizing its international diplomatic engagements, as evidenced by their recent interactions with the Communist Party of China.
