Morocco plans to become a leader in electric vehicle production, aiming to manufacture electric cars completely from raw materials to assembly. Morocco has unveiled ambitious plans to establish itself as a frontrunner in the electric vehicle industry and promote green transportation. According to Ryad Mezzour, the Minister of Industry and Trade, Morocco aims to be among the few nations capable of constructing electric cars entirely from scratch, encompassing the full supply chain from raw material extraction to battery production and vehicle assembly.

During a recent green energy conference in Casablanca, Minister Mezzour emphasized that this initiative is not a distant vision but a current endeavor that is already underway. He noted that Morocco will be the sole nation in the Euro-African region with the capability to manufacture electric vehicles comprehensively, including the mining of essential materials such as phosphate and cobalt.

In anticipation of substantial export growth, the government aims to triple Morocco’s exports by 2030. In conjunction with electric vehicle production, the Moroccan government is also making strides in enhancing public transport, particularly through the acquisition of electric buses. They have commenced the procurement of 7,000 electric buses.

The initial order consists of 1,300 buses, with plans for at least half of the remaining 6,000 to be electric. Moroccan officials are currently working on the local production of high-powered electric buses, which are projected to cost between $180,000 and $200,000 each.

As Morocco prepares to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the nation views its green transition as a vital component in modernizing its transport infrastructure and curbing pollution.
