NiDCOM Demands Investigation into Suspicious Death of Nigerian Player in Uganda

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of NiDCOM, has raised alarms over the suspicious death of Nigerian player Abubakar Lawal in Uganda. Initially thought to be an accident, details emerged indicating he fell from a balcony. NiDCOM and the Nigerian Embassy are demanding a thorough investigation alongside local authorities to seek justice for Lawal.

The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has expressed concerns regarding the death of Abubakar Lawal, a former Nigerian junior international and player for Vipers SC in Uganda. She referred to the circumstances surrounding his death as suspicious and has called for an extensive investigation into the incident, according to reports from The PUNCH.

Abubakar Lawal’s passing was confirmed by his football club and the Ugandan Police. Initial reports indicated that he had died in a motorcycle accident, but police later revealed that he allegedly fell from the balcony of a shopping mall in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda.

The police reported that Lawal had arrived at the shopping mall in his vehicle to meet his friend, Omary Naima, a Tanzanian resident. Naima stated that after preparing tea for Lawal, she stepped out to a gaming area, and shortly after 8 AM, Lawal reportedly fell from the balcony of the mall, subsequently being pronounced dead at Entebbe Referral Hospital.

Amidst the unfolding situation and public demand for clarification, including a statement from Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa, Abike Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that NiDCOM is actively monitoring developments. She mentioned ongoing communication with Nigerian authorities and the Nigeria Football Federation to ensure a thorough investigation with collaboration from the Ugandan government.

The Nigerian Embassy in Uganda is also working on the matter, with Ambassador Shama Shanga engaging with local authorities and demanding a comprehensive inquiry. Dabiri-Erewa stressed the necessity of investigating this tragic incident without any cover-ups, expressing condolences and support for Lawal’s grieving family while she reiterated her commitment to ensuring thorough investigations.

In summary, the circumstances surrounding the death of Abubakar Lawal have raised significant concerns, prompting calls for a rigorous investigation by NiDCOM and Nigerian authorities. Both the Nigerian Embassy in Uganda and relevant officials are involved in addressing the situation to ensure justice is served. The tragic loss of Lawal has generated a strong response from the community, highlighting the need for accountability and transparency.
