Nigeria Seeks Investigation into Death of Footballer Abubakar Lawal in Uganda
The Nigerian government is demanding a full investigation into the death of Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian footballer in Uganda. The acting High Commissioner has called for a thorough autopsy and scrutiny of the incident, in which Lawal reportedly fell from a mall balcony. The Nigerian government has called for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian footballer who died in Uganda. Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), expressed concern regarding the uncertain conditions of Lawal’s demise, describing the situation as deeply distressing.
The Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in Uganda, Ambassador Shama Shanga, has officially requested a full autopsy and an in-depth examination of the incident. “This is pathetic and appears suspicious. We demand a thorough investigation. No cover up at all. This is so sad!” stated Dabiri-Erewa in her remarks, emphasizing the need for transparency in the matter.
Authorities are looking into the case, as the Kajjansi Police Division has confirmed they are probing the accident that led to Lawal’s death. The footballer, who played for Vipers Sports Club and was also a final-year student at Cavendish University, reportedly fell from the third floor of the Voicemall Shopping Arcade on the morning of February 24, 2025.
Preliminary findings reveal that Lawal arrived in his vehicle to meet a friend, Omary Naima, a Tanzanian resident in the arcade. Naima left Lawal in their room to run some errands, and he subsequently fell around 8:00 am. After being transported to Entebbe Referral Hospital, he was pronounced dead.
The police recovered various personal items from Lawal’s backpack, including two smartphones and a training kit, which will aid in the investigation. Additionally, CCTV footage is being reviewed, and witness interrogations are ongoing to clarify the events leading up to this tragic incident.
