INAM Predicts Development of Cyclones Honde and Garance in Madagascar
INAM has predicted the development of two tropical storms, Honde and Garance, with potential implications for Mozambique. Honde is expected to strengthen and cause rainfall effects, while Garance will not impact the country. INAM recommends safety measures for maritime navigation due to these systems.
The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) forecasts the formation of two cyclones, ‘Honde’ and ‘Garance,’ poised to develop between Thursday and Friday in the southern and eastern regions of Madagascar. These systems are expected to generate strong winds in the Mozambique Channel while impacting weather patterns across Mozambique.
Moderate Tropical Storm Honde is currently situated approximately 250 kilometers off the coast of Inhambane province, progressing southward towards Madagascar. It is anticipated to evolve into a tropical cyclone on Friday, February 28, resulting in powerful winds and varying rainfall across parts of Mozambique.
Meteorologist Lelo Tayob clarified that although the storm is not directly impacting Mozambique, its expansive nature influences atmospheric circulation, leading to rainfall on land. “This system is not in our country, it is at sea, in the Mozambique Channel. However, it is large and impacts the general circulation of the atmosphere… its direct effects are at sea, but, due to the air masses, the rains will be felt on the mainland,” Tayob explained.
Tropical Storm Garance is also moving east of Madagascar and is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone. However, it does not pose a threat to Mozambique. “Tomorrow, [Tropical Storm Garance] will evolve into a tropical cyclone, but given its size, location, and movement, which is far from Madagascar, it will not have an impact on the continental part of our country… it will not have any significant influence,” stated Tayob.
In light of these developments, INAM urges caution and recommends safety measures, particularly related to maritime navigation, given the potential risks associated with these tropical systems.
In summary, while INAM predicts the development of cyclones ‘Honde’ and ‘Garance,’ neither system poses a direct threat to Mozambique. Cyclone Honde may bring moderate rainfall to the mainland due to its influence on atmospheric conditions, although its primary effects will be at sea. Precautions are advised for maritime activities as these phenomena evolve.
