In California, an Indian postgraduate student named Nilam Shinde, aged 35, is currently facing life-threatening health issues following a severe accident earlier this month. Hailing from Satara district in Maharashtra, she was critically injured after being struck by a car while walking on February 14. Family reports indicate that she remains in a critical condition, albeit with a minor improvement in her health status.

Ms. Shinde is presently receiving intensive care at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, where she is in a comatose state and unable to communicate due to her injuries. The hospital has requested her father to travel to the United States immediately to assist in making essential medical decisions regarding her care. A letter from California State University emphasized the urgency, stating, “The patient’s father must assist the UC Davis Medical Center care team with making Ms Shinde’s medical care planning decisions.”

Following her accident, Ms. Shinde’s family became aware of her predicament two days later and subsequently applied for a visa on February 16. Their application, however, has been pending. Since the incident garnered media attention, local government officials, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, have communicated with the family, promising to facilitate assistance promptly.

The Indian government is actively engaging with their U.S. counterparts regarding the visa application process for Ms. Shinde’s relatives. The External Affairs Ministry’s Americas Division has reportedly reached out to American authorities to expedite the issuance of a visa or an emergency travel permit for her family.

Recently, there have been slight signs of improvement in Ms. Shinde’s health, as reported by her uncle. “Her brain pressure has reduced since yesterday and is normal now, and her blood pressure has also increased and is maintained at a normal rate, but she is still in a coma,” he stated. The family continues to emphasize the need for an emergency visa for her father, Tanaji Shinde, and uncle to support her medical needs.
