Tropical Cyclone Garance has struck the French Indian Ocean island of Reunion, bringing winds over 200 km/h and heavy rain, resulting in flooding and power outages. Residents have been advised to remain indoors, with 683 individuals seeking shelter and some evacuations taking place. A red warning is still active as emergency services assist affected areas.
The French Indian Ocean island of Reunion is currently facing the effects of Tropical Cyclone Garance, which has prompted local authorities to advise residents to remain indoors. The cyclone has unleashed heavy rainfall and wind gusts exceeding 200 kilometers per hour (124 mph), resulting in flooding, power outages, and structural damage across the island.
In light of the severe weather, 683 individuals have taken refuge in emergency shelters, with an additional 54 residents evacuated as a precaution against flooding and landslides. Fortunately, officials have reported no fatalities at this time. Approximately 30% of households are without electricity, and nearly 10% of the population lacks access to safe drinking water.
The strong winds have damaged many properties, causing roofs, doors, and windows to be torn off. Emergency services are dispatching tarpaulins to the most affected regions in Eastern Reunion. While the highest level of cyclone warning was lifted, a red warning remains in effect, urging all residents to stay inside as the hazardous weather conditions continue.
According to the national meteorological agency, Meteo France, wind speeds of up to 214 kilometers per hour were recorded at Reunion’s primary airport. Located approximately 1,500 kilometers southeast of Mayotte, another French territory recently devastated by Cyclone Chido, Reunion remains vigilant in the wake of recent severe weather incidents.
Cyclone Garance has significantly impacted Reunion, causing extensive damage and displacing many residents. Emergency response efforts are underway, but authorities continue to emphasize the importance of safety and staying indoors due to ongoing dangerous conditions. The situation is being closely monitored, with community needs being addressed as power outages and water supply issues arise.
