Katja Mia recently celebrated her engagement to her partner, Daragh Curran, with a lively gathering in Dublin. However, she announced that the festivities will continue, as she is planning a traditional engagement celebration in her home country of Burundi. During a conversation with Vicki Notaro on her podcast, “You Had Me At Hello,” she shared that her mother has expressed a desire to host a full traditional engagement ceremony.
Katja reminisced about her upbringing, stating, “I would have grown up going to these traditional engagements. The traditional engagement there is way bigger than the white wedding. They go all out. There’s Burundian drummers, Burundian dancers; you wear traditional clothing.” Her fiancé, Daragh, is also eagerly anticipating this cultural experience, particularly as it will mark his first visit to Burundi and Africa. Katja expressed, “[My family] are mad to meet him!” highlighting the excitement surrounding his introduction to her family.
In addition to the engagement celebrations, Katja also provided insight into her planned wedding day. She stated, “We’re going to have a destination wedding with a bunch of our friends and family who can travel. But that’s not any time soon. This is the first hurdle. We’ll deal with this last year.”, noting that the traditional engagement in Burundi is a way to commemorate their union before the wedding takes place.
In summary, Katja Mia is set to continue her engagement celebrations with a traditional ceremony in Burundi, highlighting her cultural roots. The excitement is palpable for both her and Daragh as they prepare for this significant event. Furthermore, they intend to host a destination wedding in the future, making the journey towards their marital union even more special.
