Mark Dubowitz, CEO of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, expressed skepticism, stating that Trump may misinterpret Russia as a partner rather than an opponent. Although Trump aims to engage Russia to persuade Iran on nuclear issues, the likelihood of cooperation remains uncertain. Dubowitz remarked on the hope that Russia could help by exerting significant pressure on Iran.

Trump and Putin discussed the mediation in a recent phone call and conversations between officials reportedly took place in Saudi Arabia. However, Jonathan Lord from the Center for a New American Security cautioned against relying on Russia, given its deep ties to Iran and its complicity in destabilizing actions, particularly regarding the war in Ukraine.

National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes emphasized that U.S. discussions with Iran will proceed from a position of strength. Hughes cited Trump’s commitment to preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and reiterated a strict approach to sanctions. Nevertheless, uncertainty exists surrounding Trump’s strategic goals, as he previously expressed ambivalence about sanctions while also supporting the “maximum pressure” strategy against Iran.

Experts suggest that current conditions may not be conducive to achieving the success Trump experienced during his first term. Jonathan Ruhe from the Jewish Institute for National Security of America argued that the existing pressure on Iran is inadequate to yield substantial results. Although Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu supports Trump’s diplomatic efforts, Israeli leaders have remained silent regarding Russia’s recent role in the talks.
