Umaro Sissoco Embalo, the President of Guinea-Bissau, announced on Monday his intention to seek a second term this November, contradicting his earlier commitment to step down. This move has raised concerns regarding the timing of his current term’s conclusion and the postponement of elections. Following a diplomatic tour in Russia, Azerbaijan, and Hungary, Embalo stated, “I will be a candidate in my own succession.”

The political landscape remains contentious, with the opposition asserting that Embalo’s five-year term, commenced in 2020, should have ended in February. In contrast, the Supreme Court of Justice declared that his term would conclude on September 4. Further tension arises as Embalo indicated that the presidential and legislative elections will not occur until November 30, after being postponed indefinitely due to purported technical and financial issues.

Embaldo, a 52-year-old former army general, remarked, “I will talk to the political parties first about the forthcoming elections, and then I will issue a presidential decree.” His presidency has been marred by political instability and two reported coup attempts since he took office. Notably, he previously disclosed that his wife had advised him against seeking reelection, complicating his political trajectory.
