Disaster Toll Rises: Over 40,000 Households Affected in Malawi

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs reports that 40,178 households in Malawi have been affected by disasters due to the ongoing rainy season. This marks an increase in both the number of affected individuals and fatalities, with 39 recorded deaths. Relief efforts are underway, reaching over 80 percent of affected families with necessary supplies.

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) of Malawi has reported a dramatic increase in disaster-affected households due to the ongoing rainy season. Currently, 40,178 households, affecting approximately 180,801 individuals, have been reported impacted by a range of disasters such as stormy rains, hailstorms, strong winds, floods, and lightning. This figure shows a marked increase from the 35,661 households reported earlier in February 2025.

The details shared by DoDMA indicate that, out of the affected households, 809 individuals have been displaced. Tragically, the total number of fatalities has risen to 39, with 26 deaths attributed to lightning strikes and 13 to collapsing walls and roofs. Among the deceased are two infants—a three-month-old and another child—who succumbed to lightning strikes in Mzuzu City and Nkhata Bay District. The number of recorded injuries has increased to 483, primarily due to lightning and structural collapses.

In response to the disasters, DoDMA has reached over 80 percent of the affected households with essential relief supplies. These include food items such as maize and beans, along with non-food items like blankets, pails, and plastic sheets to help provide temporary roofs. The department has committed to continuing its relief efforts and will keep the public updated on the ongoing situation regarding disasters and relief responses.

In summary, the ongoing rainy season in Malawi has resulted in extensive damage and loss, affecting over 40,000 households. The rise in deaths and injuries, particularly from lightning strikes, has highlighted the urgent need for relief efforts. DoDMA is actively providing assistance to those impacted and will continue to communicate developments to the public.
