Darlington College Students Experience Thai Cuisine on Exciting Journey

Eighteen culinary students from Darlington College traveled to Bangkok to enhance their culinary skills in Thai cuisine. Funded by the Turing Scheme, the 15-day trip included studies at Suan Dusit University. Students will showcase their experiences at an Asian-themed buffet on March 11, promoting cultural exchange and culinary appreciation.

A group of eighteen Level 2 and 3 culinary skills students, along with three staff members from Darlington College, embarked on a remarkable 15-day journey to Bangkok, Thailand, to enhance their culinary skills focused on Thai cuisine. This trip, supported by the Turing Scheme of the Department for Education, aimed to expand their culinary knowledge and cultural experiences. Students participated in a program at Suan Dusit University, culminating in a certificate as part of the London-Bangkok World City Links initiative on Traditional Thai Cuisine.

The trip can be particularly inspirational for mature student and learning support worker, Tina Snowball. Describing her first visit to Southeast Asia, she expressed, “It was brilliant, incredible and I am thinking of retiring there. The people are extremely welcoming and there are so many nationalities that you don’t feel out of place.” Snowball, a passionate cook, emphasized the positive impact of the trip on her culinary interests.

Seventeen-year-old Alisha Goddard, from Catterick Garrison, shared her enthusiasm, stating, “I loved how different it was from here and I would certainly go back. I now don’t want to stay in the UK and this has encouraged me to work abroad, possibly on cruise ships.” Her experience underlines the profound influence the trip had on her aspirations.

Dawn Cobb, a lecturer at Darlington College, highlighted the vibrant experience of the students, noting, “The trip was absolutely incredible and our students threw themselves into the Thai food culture with such enthusiasm.” Cobb praised the warm hospitality of the Thai people, reflecting on the significant learning opportunity provided to the students.

To commemorate their journey and share their newfound knowledge, students at Darlington College will host an Asian-themed buffet on March 11 at the Glasshouse Restaurant, starting at 6:30 p.m. Attendees will be treated to dishes inspired by their culinary experiences in Thailand, showcasing the skills they acquired.
