UNICEF Reports Severe Flood Impact in Botswana: Emergency Response Initiated

UNICEF’s Flood Situation Report No. 1, released on 7 March 2025, details the severe flooding impacting Botswana since 16 February. This natural disaster, resulted from heavy rainfall, has displaced over five thousand individuals, including many children, significantly disrupting access to clean water, healthcare, education, and proper shelter. The crisis predominantly affects vulnerable populations, heightening the risk of disease outbreaks.

The floods have severely impacted infrastructure, leading to road closures and power outages, which impede mobility and disrupt essential services. Health clinics located in Molapowabojang and Kanye are currently experiencing significant service interruptions, further exacerbating the challenges faced by the affected communities.

In response to the crisis, UNICEF has allocated US$50,000 in partnership with the Botswana Red Cross Society to deliver essential supplies. This aid package includes hygiene kits, safe drinking water, and oral rehydration salts, as well as establishing links to health facilities and child protection measures in evacuation centers.

Additionally, UNICEF has made an appeal for US$860,000 to aid in supporting the government’s efforts to provide life-saving assistance and facilitate long-term recovery for the affected populations.
