Nigeria’s North-East to Launch Mass Electric Vehicle Transportation Initiative

The Tinubu administration is set to initiate a significant electric vehicle transportation project in northeast Nigeria. The Federal Executive Council has approved contracts valued at nearly $100 million, or N151.9 billion, aimed at supplying electric buses and tricycles, and developing the necessary charging infrastructure.

As part of the initiative, ten 17-seater electric buses will be supplied by Bluecrest Integrated Concept Limited at a cost of N2.9 billion, with delivery expected within six months. Additionally, Mutual Commitment Company Limited will provide 4,000 e-tricycles for N49.6 billion over the next nine months, and Shanghai Integrated Infrastructure Development will deliver another 3,000 e-tricycles for N37.2 billion.

Another supplier, Sinoma Investment International Limited, will also contribute 3,000 tricycles, designed to accommodate nine passengers plus a driver. Furthermore, HNCEGC will provide 100 BYD Dolphin EVs alongside other models for a contract sum of N16.3 billion, while KB Laman Motors Nigeria Limited will oversee the establishment of charging points for the vehicles at a cost of N8.4 billion.

The North East Development Commission is responsible for financing these contracts, which are integral to the region’s initiative to decrease carbon emissions and enhance energy efficiency. President Tinubu endorsed the procurement of the electric vehicles in October of the previous year, following an inspection of the vehicles, chargers, and batteries.
