Voting Opens for World Zionist Congress: A Critical Moment for Israel’s Future

Voting has begun for the 39th World Zionist Congress, where American Jews can influence Israel’s future and allocation of over $5 billion in funding for Jewish causes. The election features 21 slates representing diverse ideologies, amidst a backdrop of heightened political divisions and issues pivotal to Jewish identity and statehood. Voting has commenced for the 39th World Zionist Congress (WZC), offering American Jews a significant opportunity to influence Israel’s future. The electoral outcome will shape the balance of power within Zionist organizations established by Theodor Herzl over 128 years ago and will determine the allocation of more than $5 billion in funding for Jewish causes. Furthermore, it will influence quasi-governmental entities such as the Jewish Agency and the Jewish National Fund, which are crucial to immigration and land ownership in Israel.

The elections are set from March 10 to May 4, allowing any adult Jew residing in the United States who agrees to a specific set of Zionist principles and pays a registration fee of $5 to participate. There are 21 slates for voters to choose from, an increase from the previous 15. The election will see 152 representatives from American Jewry join 173 representatives from other regions and 200 selected by Israeli political parties. Each slate has distinct agendas, ranging from Achdut Israel, which is focused on military support in response to the Hamas attack on October 7, to ANU, which advocates for younger Jewish generations seeking a pluralistic and two-state solution.

American Forum for Israel emphasizes Torah values and settlement advocacy, while Vote Reform represents a significant portion of the American Jewish community, prioritizing a democratic and vibrant Israeli society. Other noteworthy slates include Vision, which opposes the two-state solution, and ZOA Coalition, staunchly advocating against Palestinian statehood.

Increased electoral participation is critical, as only a small fraction of American Jews voted in previous elections. Yizhar Hess from the World Zionist Organization describes low turnout as a “shande” or shame, undermining the foundational pluralistic ideals of Zionism. He is working diligently to raise awareness and encourage voting among the Diaspora to ensure true representation in the congress.
