Aston Martin recently expressed optimism following the opening round of the 2025 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) held in Qatar, where their Valkyrie Hypercar demonstrated significant potential. Fielding two cars, Aston Martin THOR Team made a strong statement on the Lusail International Circuit against competitors including Alpine, BMW, and Ferrari, marking a historic moment for the renowned British brand.

The Valkyries, which made their global debut during the ten-hour race, started in 16th and 18th positions. Despite the initial challenges, the vehicles showcased competitive speed, notably with Marco Sørenson achieving impressive sector times and Tom Gamble clocking the car’s fastest lap, closely competing with established teams.

Reflecting on the experience, Tom Gamble emphasized the positive outcomes from the event, stating, “It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster. We learned so much … and that was our main objective.” Despite the withdrawal of one vehicle due to a transmission fault, the second Valkyrie finished in 17th place after overcoming mechanical obstacles.

Sørenson acknowledged the challenges faced but conveyed optimism about the team’s progress, asserting, “It feels like we are moving forward all the time… we showed with our race pace that the car has a great deal of very exciting potential that we will unlock.”

Aston Martin’s management recognized the event as a learning opportunity. Adam Carter, Head of Endurance, noted the occurrence of typical “teething issues”, while also highlighting the encouraging data gathered during the weekend’s proceedings. Team Principal, Ian James, echoed this sentiment, remarking on the team’s camaraderie and the competitive potential of the Valkyrie.

He stated, “We also know we have the most learning to do, and the most to come from our package… There’s much to be excited about.” The promising signs exhibited by the Valkyries suggest that Aston Martin is poised to make significant strides as the season progresses.
