Chinese Mining Supervisor Remanded for Gwanda Artisanal Miner’s Murder

In a significant development, a Chinese mining supervisor named Yang Zhian has been remanded in custody following the fatal shooting of Pardon Gumbo, an artisanal miner, at Long Fortune Mine in Gwanda. The incident occurred on March 5, during a confrontation related to illegal gold prospecting activities.

Reports indicate that Gumbo, aged 31, was part of a group of artisanal miners who entered the mine equipped with metal detectors and a mattock. Despite attempts by security guard Gift Tashinga Mandeya to prevent them from prospecting near a slime dam, the miners persisted.

Mandeya subsequently notified Zhian, who allegedly armed himself and fired at the miners. Tragically, Gumbo sustained a gunshot wound to the forehead and was transported to Gwanda Provincial Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Zhian faced the court following the incident, where he was formally remanded in custody until March 21, as investigations into the matter proceed.
