NBA Decries Police Shootings and Extrajudicial Killings in Niger State

They have called upon the police to conduct thorough investigations into these cases, prosecute the responsible officers, and provide compensation to the families of the victims while implementing preventive measures to prevent future occurrences.
In a formal letter addressed to the Niger State Commissioner of Police, signed by Chairman Barr. Isyaku Barau, the NBA condemned the unlawful killings of innocent civilians. Barr. Barau emphasized that such actions violate fundamental human rights and erode public trust in law enforcement, citing specific incidents that exemplify this crisis.
Among the alarming cases highlighted were the killing of a Keke NAPEP rider, a female immigration officer shot near the Obasanjo Shopping Complex, and the murder of a young professional footballer in Maitumbi, allegedly at the hands of an intoxicated police officer. These incidents reflect a troubling pattern of extrajudicial violence, as stated by Barr. Barau.
The NBA has urged the police command to take decisive action. This includes conducting prompt investigations, prosecuting those involved, compensating victims’ families, and enhancing preventive measures such as reassessing firearm handling protocols and implementing psychological evaluations for active officers.
The NBA Minna Branch also cautioned that any attempts to shield those accountable would provoke legal action and public advocacy. They underscored the necessity of protecting lives and property while reinforcing the urgent need for police reforms to restore public confidence in law enforcement.
