Severe Disruption of Mozambique’s EN1 Highway Due to Tropical Storm JUDE

Faquira Massalo, the Director of Public Works in Nampula, emphasized the significant nature of the damage yet underscored the importance of restoring traffic on this vital highway.

The section affected by the storm is approximately 15 meters long and reaches depths of 5 to 7 meters. The National Roads Administration (ANE), along with engineers from the contracting company responsible for the emergency works, has arrived on-site to evaluate conditions. Their plan involves placing washers to facilitate proper water flow.

As a result of the storm, many routes in Nampula province are currently inaccessible, including areas from Nametil to Angoche and from Nampula to Liúpio, along with other critical sections. Anacleta Botão, the INGD delegate in Nampula, reported a lack of immediate, concrete data on the human impact of the cyclone due to restricted survey capabilities.

However, she confirmed that emergency kits have been strategically deployed in identified areas that could potentially be affected by the storm, ensuring readiness for any immediate needs of the population.
