Autopsy of Fallen Kenyan Officer Samuel Kaetuai Confirms Cause of Death in Haiti

An autopsy performed on Samuel Kaetuai, a 26-year-old Kenyan police officer, revealed he died from a single gunshot wound to the head. The postmortem examination took place on March 11 at the Chiromo Funeral Parlour in Nairobi, where the pathologist confirmed that the bleeding from the wound was the cause of death.

Kaetuai’s body was repatriated to Kenya on Monday evening after a two-week wait, providing relief to his family who had been anxious to identify their loved one. The police officer was killed while serving on a peacekeeping mission in Haiti, and his body was received at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by fellow officers, family members, including his wife and father, Salaash Kaetuai.

Although the date of burial has not yet been established, Kaetuai’s remains will be preserved at the Chiromo mortuary pending further preparations. He was shot during a police operation in the Western Artibonite region, located 92 kilometers north of Port-au-Prince, where Kenyan forces were deployed to combat local gangs.

On February 24, Godfrey Otunge, the Commander of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, reported that Kaetuai was airlifted to a hospital shortly after the shooting, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. In a display of solidarity, Inspector General of the National Police Service, Douglas Kanja, visited Kaetuai’s family to express condolences.

The MSS mission, which has been active in Haiti since June 2024, aims to assist in stabilizing the country by addressing gang violence. Notably, Kaetuai was the first casualty among the Kenyan contingent during this operation, highlighting the dangers faced by the troops.
