The spillage from the Akosombo Dam is estimated to have displaced around 35,857 individuals, including children, as reported by UNICEF. In 2023, the Volta River Authority initiated a controlled release of water from the dam to prevent an overflow, which subsequently led to flooding in low-lying communities along the Volta River, particularly affecting the North and Central Tongu districts.
