SMA Altenso Achieves Gigawatt Milestone in Renewable Hydrogen Technology

SMA Altenso has surpassed 1 GW in total power delivery for hydrogen applications with its successful project in Namibia. The achievement is a result of the company’s expertise in renewable energy technologies, focusing on green hydrogen production through innovative systems. Altenso’s projects aim to significantly enhance sustainable energy solutions and contribute to industrial decarbonization.

SMA Altenso, a subsidiary of SMA Solar Technology AG, is making strides in renewable energy through global initiatives. Following the successful deployment of SMA inverter technology in a hydrogen project by Cleanergy Solutions Namibia, Altenso has achieved a significant milestone, delivering over 1 gigawatt (GW) of power for hydrogen applications. This project illustrates Altenso’s pivotal role as a leader in sustainable energy by integrating photovoltaics, battery storage, and hydrogen production.

Dr. Jens Eiko Birkholz, Head of Sales & Business Development at Altenso, commended their recent gigawatt milestone and successful execution of over 80 hydrogen projects, primarily focused on green hydrogen derived from PV and wind energy. He asserted that Altenso’s technological prowess and experience in international project management are vital for navigating the complexities of modern energy projects, including offshore ventures, with the potential to yield 130,000 tons of green hydrogen annually for industrial decarbonization.

SMA CEO Jürgen Reinert underscored the necessity for stable grid integration and load management in the progressing hydrogen and renewable energy sector. He pointed to SMA’s cutting-edge technologies and Altenso’s expertise in project execution as key drivers for facilitating renewable energy integration and shaping the future energy landscape.

Within the Namibian project on the Atlantic coast, Altenso is spearheading the system integration of a battery storage system (BESS) and implementing power-to-gas (P2G) solutions for hydrogen production. The project anticipates the installation of the PV farm and battery inverter technology to be completed by late 2024, with hydrogen production projected to commence by mid-2025. SMA’s specialized rectifier solution, featuring IGBT technology, guarantees compatibility with a variety of electrolyzers while enhancing grid stability through integrated services such as fault ride-through and reactive power support.

Additionally, Altenso has developed an advanced energy management system (EMS) specifically tailored for such projects, aiming to optimize sustainable hydrogen production by leveraging PV forecasts and adapting to dynamic demand profiles.

In conclusion, SMA Altenso’s recent achievement of surpassing 1 GW in hydrogen applications marks a pivotal advancement in renewable energy technology. The company’s innovative projects, particularly in Namibia, not only underscore its leadership role but also demonstrate the potential for significant contributions to green hydrogen production. With its strong technological foundation and commitment to sustainable development, Altenso is well positioned to support the decarbonization of industrial processes and lead the evolution of integrated renewable energy solutions.
