The upcoming weather forecast for Kenya predicts moderate rainfall and elevated temperatures for the week of March 12 to March 19. The Igad Climate Predictions and Applications Center (ICPAC) has indicated that light rainfall is expected in parts of western Kenya, with totals anticipated to be below 50 mm. Additionally, other neighboring regions such as southern and western Uganda, most of South Sudan, and parts of Ethiopia may also experience similar light rainfall.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has further issued warnings regarding possible isolated heavy rainfall throughout many areas in the country. Specifically, Nairobi, Murang’a, and Kiambu Counties in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley may see morning rains intermittently during this forecast period, accompanied by sunny intervals on Thursday and Friday. Potential afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms are also predicted.
Temperatures are expected to rise significantly in some regions, potentially exceeding 32 °C, particularly in eastern South Sudan, western Ethiopia, and north-western Kenya. Conversely, areas such as Nairobi and Kiambu are projected to maintain milder temperatures, remaining below 20 °C. Additionally, regions including Makueni, Machakos, and Taita Taveta face risks of elevated heat stress, as highlighted in the report.
Moreover, the ICPAC has forecasted drier-than-usual conditions across numerous countries, including Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti, and several regions of Kenya during the March-April-May seasonal period. However, wetter conditions are anticipated in western and south-western Kenya, as well as parts of eastern Uganda and eastern South Sudan.
The weather forecast for Kenya highlights both rainfall prospects and temperature fluctuations over the upcoming week. While light rainfall is expected in western regions, warmer temperatures above 32 °C may occur in certain areas. Mitigation of elevated heat stress concerns in specific counties has also been noted. Overall, the precipitation patterns exhibit variability, indicating a combination of wetter and drier conditions across the region.
