Tragic Death of Bangladeshi Youth in South Africa During Robbery

A Bangladeshi man, Kamrul Islam, aged 33, was tragically shot dead in Wepener, Free State Province, South Africa, on Thursday evening. Originally from Karmullahpur village in Daganbhuiyan upazila, Feni, Kamrul had relocated to South Africa twelve years ago, beginning with a job before starting his own business.

According to his younger brother, Kamruzzaman, Kamrul was attacked by two individuals while he was closing his shop at approximately 9:00 PM. The assailants held Kamrul at gunpoint, robbing him of cash and valuables, and later took him to his parked car in search of more money.

During an altercation, one of the criminals shot Kamrul in the chest, leading to his immediate death. Kamrul had recently constructed a new home and was planning to return to Bangladesh in a few months to marry. Following this incident, their family, having lost their father earlier, has been devastated, particularly their mother, who has fainted repeatedly upon receiving the news.

The family has requested assistance from the Bangladesh embassy to repatriate Kamrul’s body. Furthermore, SM Azharul Islam, the nirbahi officer of Daganbhuiyan upazila, has stated that the local administration is prepared to provide support to the family during this difficult time.

The unfortunate demise of Kamrul Islam highlights the vulnerabilities faced by expatriates in foreign lands. His family, facing tremendous grief, has sought government support for the return of his remains.
