A Bangladeshi youth named Kamrul Islam was tragically shot and killed in Wepener, Free State Province, South Africa, Thursday evening. Kamrul, aged 33, hailed from Karmullahpur village in Daganbhuiyan upazila of Feni. He had relocated to South Africa twelve years ago, where he eventually established his own business following a short period of employment.
According to his younger brother, Kamruzzaman, Kamrul was attacked by two assailants who targeted him for robbery while he was closing his shop around 9:00 PM. The suspects held him at gunpoint, stealing cash and valuables from the establishment. In their search for more money, they forced Kamrul to a car parked nearby, where a confrontation ensued, resulting in Kamrul being fatally shot in the chest.
Kamrul was poised to return to Bangladesh in the following months to marry, having recently constructed a new home in his village. His family, who had previously endured the loss of their father, expressed deep sorrow over his death, with their mother reportedly fainting upon learning of the tragedy. The family has since requested assistance from the Bangladesh embassy to repatriate Kamrul’s body.
SM Azharul Islam, the upazila nirbahi officer, stated that the administration stands prepared to aid Kamrul’s family in any necessary arrangements to return his remains to Bangladesh.

Despite his contributions to his community in South Africa and plans for a future in Bangladesh, his life was cut short in a violent robbery.
