Nigerian Navy Intercepts Smuggled Petrol and Foreign Rice in Lagos

The Nigerian Navy’s FOB Badagry has seized 13,800 liters of petrol and 71 bags of foreign rice in operations targeting smuggling activities. Conducted from March 7 to 14, these operations were based on intelligence reports. Naval forces are intensifying efforts to combat smuggling along the Badagry-Porto Novo creeks, ensuring cooperation with customs authorities.

The Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) Badagry has successfully intercepted a significant quantity of illicit goods including 13,800 liters of petrol and 71 bags of foreign rice during operations conducted along Badagry creeks. Navy Captain Oyeleye Omotayo confirmed that these seizures, taking place from March 7 to March 14, were the result of intelligence regarding suspected smuggling activities in the region.

Captain Omotayo emphasized that naval forces launched a targeted operation on March 14 aimed at confronting smugglers and confiscating goods intended for illegal export. The initial operation at 2:54 a.m. encountered challenges, as smugglers tried to evade capture but were ultimately apprehended by a land patrol unit later that morning.

During this operation, 71 bags of foreign rice were discovered, but the suspects managed to escape upon realizing the naval presence. All seized items have been transported back to the base for appropriate processing and action.

Another operation was triggered by intelligence reports about petrol stockpiling at a beach near Bollington. Despite finding four vehicles related to the smuggling attempt, the operatives could not capture the individuals involved, who fled the scene.

Further inspections led to the discovery of 234 jerry cans, totaling about 5,850 liters of petrol. Additionally, other operations conducted in various Badagry communities resulted in the confiscation of 7,770 liters of petrol in total; the details of these earlier seizures include 6,770 liters and 1,000 liters obtained from filling stations and local areas.

Captain Omotayo stated that the Navy’s operations are in alignment with a broader strategy to enhance security on Nigeria’s waterways. He reiterated the Navy’s commitment to intensifying efforts against smuggling and criminal activities, acknowledging the directives from higher authorities, including Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla’s Strategic Directive 2023-06.

He further warned individuals involved in illicit activities, stating that they will face strict legal repercussions and affirmed the Navy’s cooperation with sister agencies, particularly the Nigeria Customs Service, to support community safety and law enforcement.
