Following a complaint from Patricia Kyei, law enforcement was able to recover the stolen goods and charge Buamah accordingly.
On March 17, 2024, Tarkwa District Court One sentenced Enoch Buamah, a 19-year-old illegal miner, to three months in hard labour for stealing items valued at GH¢7,563.00. Buamah had previously been jailed for a similar crime and admitted guilt to charges of unlawful entry, causing damage, and stealing. The sentences for these offenses will run concurrently.
The complainant, Patricia Kyei, a local hairdresser, reported the incident to the authorities. Inspector of Police Patrick Essien informed the court that Kyei lived in Nyametease and left her home secured while attending a program in a nearby town. Upon her return on March 12, she discovered her home had been broken into, with the door severely damaged.
Kyei identified that the inner door lock worth GH¢1,000 was destroyed and several personal items including a television, cloth, cooking utensils, and other valuables were missing. After notifying the local task force, they conducted an investigation that led them to Buamah. He confessed, leading authorities to his residence where the stolen items were retrieved before he was arrested and handed over to local police for formal charges.
The case highlights the ongoing issue of illegal mining and theft within communities. Enoch Buamah’s sentencing serves as a warning against such criminal activities, particularly the impacts they have on victims and the legal repercussions that follow. The successful recovery of stolen items further illustrates the effectiveness of local enforcement and community vigilance in tackling such offenses.
