Elvis Lenzy: A Rising Star in Rwandan Music

Elvis Lenzy, a rising star in Rwandan music, gained attention with his debut single “Tina” and has since released “Akanyambo.” Raised by his aunt after losing his parents, Lenzy honed his musical craft at Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village. He aims to blend various genres and remains open to collaborations as he navigates the industry with faith and determination.

Elvis Lenzy, a burgeoning name in Rwanda’s music scene, captured attention with his debut single “Tina” in January 2023. Born Elvis Inyarubuga on July 2, 2003, in Ngoma District, he was raised by his aunt after the tragic loss of his parents. He completed his primary education at New Life Christian Academy and attended Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village for high school, where he honed his musical skills alongside now-prominent talents such as Juno Kizigenza and producer Compressor.

During his time at Agahozo, Lenzy experienced his first studio recordings, collaborating with friends who remain influential in his career. He recalls, “I used to sing all the time, everywhere—at home, for friends, for anyone who would listen. But I didn’t start recording until I got to Agahozo. That’s when I really began experimenting with my sound and meeting people who helped me grow.” Lenzy describes his music style as a blend of various sounds, primarily influenced by Afrobeat but also embracing dancehall and trap. He states, “I just want to make music that feels good—to me and to the people listening. I can do Afrobeat, dancehall, trap… I don’t box myself in.”

Lenzy’s breakthrough arrived with “Tina,” produced by former schoolmate Flambeau, showcasing a harmonious blend of Afro-fusion rhythms. The track has established him as a promising new artist. Following this success, he released “Akanyambo” on March 14, highlighting his admiration for a beautiful girl, drawing inspiration from Rwandan cultural symbols. This song incorporates rich Kinyarwanda-English lyrics and emotionally resonant melodies, cementing Lenzy’s commitment to his heritage. Both songs were produced by Flambeau, while the music video for “Akanyambo” was directed by prominent Burundian director, John Elarts.

Lenzy articulates his creative process, noting, “Sometimes I write everything beforehand; other times, I start with melodies and build from there. Inspiration comes at the weirdest times.” He maintains a humble perspective despite his rising fame, saying, “I never set expectations. I just do what I have to do and let the people decide. My job is to make sure I’m putting in the work.”

Looking to the future, Lenzy aims to solidify his presence in the Rwandan music market, stating, “There’s a lot more music coming, and not just music—I have many projects in the works. I can’t wait for people to experience them.” He is open to collaborations as long as there is a shared vision in pursuit of artistic creation. Lenzy reflects on his journey with confidence, affirming, “I just believe that everything is in God’s hands. I work hard, and I trust that things will fall into place.” With remarkable talent and unwavering determination, Elvis Lenzy is emerging as a significant force within Rwanda’s music industry, promising exciting developments ahead.
