The NSCDC arrested a 17-member gang for murdering an officer and attacking oil and gas installations in the Niger Delta. The operation was led by the Commandant-General’s Special Intelligence Squad, resulting in recoveries of firearms and military gear. Investigations continue, with suspects expected to face court soon.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has detained a group of 17 individuals alleged to have killed an officer on January 12, 2025. This operation was conducted by the Commandant-General’s Special Intelligence Squad in coordination with other agencies, as announced by NSCDC spokesman Afolabi Babawale in Abuja.
Babawale revealed that this high-profile gang had long been monitored by the NSCDC and Tantita Security Service. Previously, they attacked a joint base of the two agencies, resulting in the death of an Assistant Superintendent of NSCDC and the theft of a speedboat and firearms.
This syndicate is believed to have conducted hostile attacks on oil and gas installations within the Niger Delta. Investigations indicate their involvement in the attack on the residence of the Petroleum Minister, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, on January 1. Ongoing investigations are expected to lead to the suspects being arraigned in court soon.
The operation also resulted in the recovery of an AK47 rifle, empty magazines, military uniforms, and boots from the suspects. Babawale praised NSCDC’s Commandant-General, Ahmed Audi, for the logistical support that facilitated a successful operation, reinforcing the corps’ commitment to addressing illegal bunkering and criminal activities.
The NSCDC has made significant progress in combating crime by apprehending a 17-member gang implicated in the murder of an officer and violent attacks on oil and gas facilities in the Niger Delta. With ongoing investigations and strong logistical support, the corps aims to ensure justice and enhance security in the region.
