Bee Group Launches Electric Mobility Project in Cameroon

Bee Group is investing RM4.5 million to launch a project in Cameroon featuring 40 electric motorcycles and charging stations, beginning in July 2025. Supported by the Cameroonian government, this initiative aims to enhance urban transportation, reduce costs, and promote environmental sustainability.

Bee Group is embarking on a groundbreaking electric mobility project in Cameroon, investing RM4.5 million (CFA610 million) to launch 40 electric motorcycles and charging stations. This initiative, executed in partnership with Chinese manufacturer Tembo Electronical Technology, aims to enhance sustainable transportation, lower costs, and reduce pollution in the region. The pilot phase of the project is set to commence in July 2025, targeting urban areas such as Douala, Yaoundé, Bertoua, and Bafoussam.

The deployment is scheduled to begin in June 2025, with each of the four cities receiving ten electric motorcycles. Each motorcycle features four batteries, with two operational while the other two recharge at designated charging stations located at TotalEnergies and Ola Energy outlets. Each station is designed to accommodate 12 batteries, ensuring a steady energy supply for the e-motorcycles.

Post-pilot, Bee Group intends to import an additional 100 electric motorcycles and aims to commence local production by 2026. This strategic move is anticipated to generate local employment, mitigate import expenses, and facilitate technology transfer to Cameroon. Patrick Timani, the CEO and co-founder of Bee Group, stresses that the initiative will foster economic growth and position Cameroon as a key player in Africa’s electric mobility sector.

The Cameroonian government is lending support to this project. In accordance with the 2025 finance law, electric vehicles will be exempted from a 12.5% excise duty, while there is a 50% tax reduction applicable to new motorcycles, batteries, and charging stations for the next two years. These financial incentives significantly lower the barriers to adopting electric vehicles, promoting sustainable transport solutions.

In addition to the economic advantages, the initiative is poised to decrease transport fares and alleviate pollution levels. With mototaxis constituting 61% of all trips in Douala, the new electric motorcycles are expected to substantially enhance urban mobility. Bee Group envisions this transition towards sustainability will also lessen dependence on fossil fuels while creating new economic opportunities for local drivers.

Following its introduction in Cameroon, Bee Group plans to replicate this electric mobility project in other African countries. By harmonizing innovation, job creation, and environmental stewardship, this initiative represents a pivotal move towards establishing a more environmentally friendly and economically viable urban transport framework across Africa.
