A Chinese robotics startup has commenced the acceptance of preorders for its AI-powered humanoid robot, the Dobot Atom, priced at 199,000 yuan (approximately $27,500). The company plans to initiate mass production by mid-year.

Developed by Dobot, located in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, the Dobot Atom can perform various tasks, including making breakfast, pouring milk, toasting bread, and transporting boxes, as demonstrated in a recent promotional video. The robot is 153 centimeters tall and weighs 62 kilograms.

On the same day, Midea Group, a major home appliance corporation, introduced a prototype humanoid robot capable of actions such as shaking hands, dancing, opening bottle caps, and driving screws, as reported by local media.

Industry expert Ma Jihua remarked that the launch of these humanoid robots indicates that China’s products are swiftly entering an early mass production phase. He anticipates the prices of such robots will gradually align with those of televisions in the near future.

Ma highlighted the significant opportunities for robotic applications in China, particularly in eldercare, educational assistance for children, and household tasks.

Earlier this year, President Xi Jinping encouraged tech entrepreneurs to contribute to the healthy development of China’s private sector, as reported by Xinhua News Agency. As competition escalates between the U.S. and China in technology, a recent governmental report announced that Beijing would enhance its self-reliance in science and technology, including support for the application of large AI models to foster intelligent robots and new energy vehicles.
