Jorge Martin Aims for Qatar Return After Injury Setbacks in MotoGP

Defending MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin aims to return to competition following two pre-season crashes. Regrettably, he has missed the initial two rounds and confirmed he will not participate in the upcoming race in Austin, Texas, on March 29 and 30. Martin hopes to compete in the fourth round scheduled at Lusail, Qatar, on April 12 and 13, contingent on the safety of his condition.

In a recent interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, Martin expressed optimism about returning to Qatar, stating, “I expect to be in Qatar, but only if it doesn’t pose any risks.” He emphasized the importance of adhering to recovery timelines, cautioning against rushing the healing process, which could prolong his absence from racing.

Martin’s pre-season testing was severely affected due to a crash that resulted in fractures to both his right hand and foot. Afterward, he experienced a second crash while training on a supermoto bike, exacerbating his injuries. He revealed a total of six fractures and muscular injuries, detailing that he sustained broken radius and scaphoid bones in his left wrist, four fractures in his left foot, and bruised ribs.

Currently, Martin trails six-time world champion Marc Marquez by 74 points, as Marquez has achieved victories in both races during the season. “Marc winning is not something anyone could not have expected,” Martin noted, reflecting on the competition dynamics. Nonetheless, he remains hopeful about his recovery, stating, “It was a difficult time but now I start to see the light.”

In a related development, Portuguese rider Miguel Oliveira, who is recovering from a shoulder injury sustained during the Sprint Race in Argentina on March 15, will miss the race in Austin. His team, Yamaha-Pramac, has announced that Spaniard Augusto Fernandez will take his place. Oliveira’s condition was further assessed in Portugal, confirming a sternoclavicular dislocation with ligament damage.
