National Security Conducts Unprecedented Raid on Former BoG Governor Dr. Addison’s Home
National Security personnel raided the home of former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison on March 19, 2025. Led by Richard Jakpa, the armed team deactivated CCTV and demanded to locate vaults, which Dr. Addison denied having. Following a fruitless search, they left with CCTV equipment, leaving the family traumatized. This incident reflects a worrying pattern of targeting former officials since the new administration’s establishment.
On March 19, 2025, approximately 20 armed personnel led by Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, executed a raid on the residence of Dr. Ernest Addison, former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, located in Roman Ridge, Accra. The heavily armed intruders, some of whom were masked and equipped with AK-47 rifles, conducted their operation early in the morning, while Dr. Addison was present in the home.
Upon arrival, the National Security team deactivated the property’s CCTV system and demanded that Dr. Addison guide them to any concealed valuables or vaults within the house. Dr. Addison reportedly informed them that he did not possess any such vaults. Undeterred, the security personnel proceeded to search the home, with witnesses stating they were seen ransacking various areas.
Ultimately, no vaults or substantial amounts of cash were discovered, according to information obtained from Asaase News. Following their unsuccessful search, the security team confiscated the CCTV monitor and its control unit. The incident left Dr. Addison and his family visibly distressed, with sources indicating a sense of trauma among them.
A former senior official from the central bank remarked on the unprecedented nature of the raid, stating, “This is the first time in the history of Ghana that such a thing is happening to a Governor of the Bank of Ghana. This is both scary and messy.” This raid marks the second instance in which Jakpa has led armed personnel to invade the residences of former officials from the previous Akufo-Addo administration since President John Mahama took office on January 7, 2025.
The first such instance involved Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, the longest-serving finance minister in Ghana, whose home in Labone, Accra, was raided by over 15 armed men on February 10, 2025. This initial incident was recorded by CCTV cameras, and footage from that raid has since been made public.
The raid on Dr. Ernest Addison’s residence signifies a troubling trend involving the National Security apparatus targeting former officials of the previous administration. The emotional impact on Dr. Addison’s family, coupled with the unprecedented nature of the incident, raises significant concerns about the potential political motives behind such actions and the implications for governance in Ghana.
