Eddie Jordan, the esteemed former Formula One team principal and co-owner of the London Irish rugby club, has passed away at the age of 76. He had previously disclosed in December that he was receiving treatment for aggressive bladder and prostate cancer, although he expressed hope about his condition at that time. Unfortunately, it has been reported that the cancer returned aggressively, leading to his death in South Africa, where he resided part of the year.

The Jordan family expressed their sorrow, stating, “EJ brought an abundance of charisma, energy, and Irish charm everywhere he went. We all have a huge hole missing without his presence. He will be missed by so many people, but he leaves us with tonnes of great memories to keep us smiling through our sorrow.” F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali remarked on the unfortunate news, highlighting Jordan’s ability to make others smile and acknowledging his significant impact on the era of Formula One.

Jordan founded the eponymous Jordan Grand Prix team in 1991, establishing himself as a prominent figure in the paddock. His team achieved remarkable success, including its best result in 1998 when drivers Damon Hill and Ralf Schumacher secured first and second place at the Belgian Grand Prix. The team continued to excel in 1999 when Heinz-Harald Frentzen contended for the championship, securing two race victories.

Throughout the 2000s, however, Jordan’s team struggled, particularly after losing a key engine partnership with Honda in 2002. Financial difficulties ensued due to the loss of sponsors, culminating in his buyout by Midland in 2005. Despite these challenges, Jordan remained influential in the sport, engaging in punditry and hosting his podcast, “Formula For Success,” with former driver David Coulthard.

Jordan was known for his vibrant and larger-than-life persona, owning homes in notable locations such as Cape Town, South Kensington, London, and Monaco. Recently, he played an instrumental role in the acquisition of London Irish, rejuvenating the club after it faced significant financial challenges.

The family’s statement articulated their grief while celebrating Jordan’s achievements: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eddie Jordan OBE. He passed away peacefully with family by his side in Cape Town…Eddie and Jordan Grand Prix were known for their rock-and-roll image.” He is survived by his wife, Marie, and their children. His absence leaves a void in the world of motorsport and beyond.
