The City of Windhoek has deployed a multi-disciplinary team consisting of officials from Human Settlement, Roads and Storm Water, Emergency Services, Disaster Risk Management, and the City Police, all prepared to mitigate risks. Should the situation necessitate, the team is ready to relocate vulnerable communities to safer areas.

As of March 18, the City responded to 21 flood-related incidents since January, notably in Otjomuise at the 8de Laan Informal Settlement, where over 280 households experienced flooding. On March 18 alone, 181 informal dwellings were relocated to Farm 508, Goreangab. Furthermore, incidents reported include a vehicle swept away at Robert Mugabe and Sean McBride Streets and three fatalities in March from various flooding-related incidents.

To address these challenges, the City has implemented several mitigation measures, such as stockpiling sandbags and ensuring that drainage systems remain functioning. Residents are advised to seek higher ground when floodwaters rise and to avoid dangerous situations, such as walking or driving through fast-flowing water, while educating children on swimming safety in water bodies.

Motorists are encouraged to utilize alternate routes when roads are flooded and to evacuate stalled vehicles to higher ground. Additionally, adherence to traffic signs and instructions from law enforcement is imperative, and drivers should exercise caution and reduce speed on wet roads.

The Flood Standby Team is actively monitoring conditions and responding to incidents, with ongoing patrols in flood hotspot areas and stormwater system inspections throughout the rainy season. Updates will be provided as new information emerges.
