Urgent Call to Improve Oral Health Engagement Among Ghanaians

Less than 10% of Ghanaians visit dentists regularly, primarily seeking care in cases of pain. A recent WHO survey highlighted high rates of oral diseases among adults, prompting urgent calls for improved oral healthcare access, education, and public health interventions. Experts emphasized the importance of oral health in overall well-being and economic potential through enhanced healthcare policies.

A recent report from the Ghana Health Service indicates that less than 10% of Ghanaians visit dentists regularly. Most individuals tend to seek dental care only when they experience pain or significant complications, which highlights a concerning trend in oral health practices across the nation. Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Acting Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, noted alarming statistics from a 2023 World Health Organisation (WHO) STEPS survey, emphasizing a high prevalence of oral diseases among the population.

The findings of the WHO survey revealed that over 70% of adults surveyed exhibited signs of gum disease, such as bleeding gums and pain, while dental caries, or tooth decay, emerged as a commonly reported condition across various age groups. During the launch of the 2025 World Oral Health Day, Professor Kaba underscored the necessity of addressing these issues promptly, pointing to the urgent need for enhanced oral health services and preventative measures.

World Oral Health Day, observed on March 20, aims to elevate public consciousness regarding oral health, deemed a critical aspect of overall well-being, often neglected in health discussions. The event, supported by Colgate, is themed “A Happy Mouth, A Happy Mind,” reflecting the connection between oral health and overall health.

The survey also indicated concerning correlations between poor oral health and non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity, suggesting that individuals with oral health issues face increased risks of these chronic conditions. Additionally, approximately 50% of respondents did not regularly use fluoride toothpaste, and many practiced infrequent brushing habits, which can exacerbate oral health problems.

In response to the growing challenges, the Ghana Health Service is expanding access to dental care by deploying additional dental professionals in underserved areas while also employing technology to enhance oral health outcomes. Efforts to bolster public health education and increase stakeholder collaborations are underway as well. Professor Kaba called upon the public to adopt better oral hygiene practices, including brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and reducing sugar intake.

Dr. Richard Selormey, General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, stressed the broader implications of oral health, citing its crucial role in systemic health. He urged the government to enhance focus on oral healthcare, emphasizing its potential for economic growth through medical tourism.

Furthermore, Mr. Edmund Nartey, a representative of the WHO, and Mr. Edward Sonkor, a representative from Colgate, echoed the importance of oral health in overall well-being. They highlighted the significance of good oral habits and the role of education in fostering a commitment to proper oral care within the community. The event also included practical demonstrations of proper oral hygiene practices, encouraging attendees to prioritize their oral health.

The findings from the Ghana Health Service and the WHO survey illustrate significant deficiencies in regular dental visits among Ghanaians, pointing to a dire need for increased awareness and access to oral healthcare. With only a small fraction of the populace seeking preventative care, there is a critical opportunity for public health initiatives to improve oral health practices. The collaborative efforts announced during World Oral Health Day aim to enhance overall health as well as address systemic health issues linked to poor oral hygiene.
