Discussions Advance for Thailand to Host Formula One Grand Prix

Formula One’s CEO Stefano Domenicali has announced that discussions are underway to host a Grand Prix in Thailand. The Thai Prime Minister has shown strong interest, and Domenicali emphasizes the importance of quality alongside an expanding calendar. With 24 races planned for 2024 and Cadillac joining as the 11th team in 2026, Formula One seeks to enhance its global footprint while maintaining a focus on sustainability and fan experience.

Stefano Domenicali, the president and CEO of Formula One, has indicated that negotiations are advancing concerning Thailand’s potential as a Grand Prix host. This development is part of Formula One’s strategy to enhance its presence in Asia while maintaining a focus on quality rather than an overwhelming number of races.

During an exclusive interview with Xinhua amidst the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix weekend, Domenicali reported that Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra conveyed a significant interest in hosting a Grand Prix event. He remarked, “The government of Thailand, the prime minister, were really interested to develop a project. We should finalize something in the next months.” He noted, however, that he is cautious about overselling the prospect.

As Formula One faces a record 24-race calendar beginning in the 2024 season, growing from 22 races in 2021, the inclusion of new locations, such as Thailand, may necessitate the rotation or removal of certain existing events. Domenicali stated, “We don’t want to go over 24 races. It’s a matter of working with opportunities,” highlighting the sport’s transformation into a global championship with less than half of the events now situated in Europe.

Domenicali emphasized the importance of enhancing the fan experience rather than merely increasing race numbers. He expressed a commitment to working with promoters to ensure quality remains paramount, reflecting his vision outlined in a recently secured five-year extension to his leadership through 2029.

In related news, the Formula One grid is set to expand in 2026 with Cadillac entering as the 11th team, financially supported by General Motors. Domenicali described this addition as a significant challenge but essential for innovation within the sport. He remarked, “Cadillac, one of the biggest manufacturers in the automotive industry in our competition, brings technology and expertise. It’s beneficial to our sport,” though he clarified that no additional teams are anticipated as the focus remains on quality.

In summary, Formula One is in advanced discussions to potentially include Thailand on its racing calendar, showcasing plans to enrich its Asian presence. As the organization balances race expansion while emphasizing quality, Domenicali continues to foster sustainable practices and improve fan experiences. With Cadillac joining the grid in 2026, the future of Formula One appears to be positioned toward innovative growth without compromising on quality.
