Welsh driver Elfyn Evans secured victory at the challenging Safari Rally Kenya, solidifying his lead in the World Rally Championship. This win marks back-to-back achievements for Evans, who previously triumphed in Sweden. With three rounds completed in the season, he now leads by 36 points over defending champion Thierry Neuville, while two-time champion Kalle Rovanpera trails by 57 points after an electrical failure forced his retirement.
Evans executed a controlled strategy throughout the race, skillfully navigating the Safari Rally’s hazards. He completed the final stage with a 1 minute and 9 second advantage over Hyundai’s Ott Tanak, who placed second. Belgian driver Neuville rounded out the podium in third, finishing at 3 minutes and 32 seconds behind.
“A huge well done to the team,” stated Evans. “They did a great job and I’m proud to be a very small part of Toyota’s history at this special rally.” Finnish driver Sami Pajari finished in fourth place for Toyota, while his teammate Takamoto Katsuta encountered difficulties, rolling his car on the final stage but managed to secure his position with the help of spectators.
The next event in the World Rally Championship calendar is scheduled for the end of April at the Rally of the Canary Islands, further intensifying the competition as the season progresses.
