First Shipment of Chinese Internal Combustion Locomotives to Mozambique
CRRC Ziyang Co. has shipped three internal combustion locomotives to Mozambique, marking the first such export from China. These SDD1 diesel locomotives are designed for African conditions and include advanced technology for reliability and safety. CRRC Ziyang, a leader in locomotive exports, has a substantial presence in the African market and aims to bolster local railway operations with this shipment.
On March 10, 2023, three internal combustion locomotives manufactured by CRRC Ziyang Co. were shipped to Mozambique, marking the inaugural export of such locomotives from China to the Mozambican railway network. This achievement represents CRRC Ziyang’s successful re-entry into the African market and highlights the company’s expanding influence within the region.
The SDD1 diesel locomotives, developed specifically for African operational conditions, feature numerous technological innovations. Designed with lightweight optimization, these units include an efficient cooling system, a new corrugated louver structure, and a modular air intake unit. Furthermore, these locomotives are equipped with an intelligent control system for real-time operational monitoring, enhancing their safety and reliability.
The deployment of these SDD1 locomotives will primarily assist with both passenger and freight shunting operations in Mozambique, significantly contributing to the enhancement of local railway transportation capabilities. CRRC Ziyang’s long-standing presence in the African market, spanning 24 years, has seen the delivery of over 230 locomotives to nearly 20 African nations, such as Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
As a leading enterprise in China’s diesel locomotive exports, CRRC Ziyang has successfully supplied more than 1,200 locomotives to 34 different countries. It is noteworthy that their exported diesel locomotive quantity constitutes over 50% of China’s total diesel locomotive exports, underscoring their prominent position in the global market.
The recent shipment of internal combustion locomotives by CRRC Ziyang to Mozambique marks a significant milestone in the expansion of Chinese manufacturing influence within the African railway sector.
