Missing Kenyan Officer Following Gang Ambush in Haiti
A Kenyan officer is missing after a gang ambush during a rescue operation in Haiti. The incident occurred when a police vehicle became stuck, leading to an attack from gang members. Efforts are underway to locate the officer, amidst growing security threats for the Kenyan-led mission.
In a distressing situation, a Kenyan officer deployed as part of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti has gone missing following a gang ambush. The incident was confirmed by MSS spokesperson Jack Ombaka, highlighting the significant dangers faced by security forces operating in the region. The ambush happened in the Artibonite Department on March 26, at 4:30 p.m., when a Haitian National Police (HNP) armored vehicle became immobilized in a ditch, which is believed to have been intentionally created by gang members.
In response to the immobilization of the HNP vehicle, two Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles from Pont-Sonde were sent to assist with the recovery. However, complications arose as one MRAP became stuck while the other experienced mechanical failure. “As the rescue teams attempted to resolve the situation, suspected gang members lying in wait launched an ambush,” Ombaka reported.
The ensuing firefight resulted in one MSS Kenyan contingent officer being unaccounted for once the shooting ceased. MSS spokesperson Ombaka emphasized, “As a result of the incident, one MSS Kenyan contingent officer remains unaccounted for. Specialized teams have been deployed to conduct a search and determine his whereabouts.” Although reports suggest that several gang members may have been injured and some fatalities occurred, detailed information regarding casualties is currently unavailable.
This occurrence reflects the increasing threat faced by the Kenyan-led MSS mission in Haiti. On March 18, a senior Kenyan officer was critically wounded during an operation in the same area, and on February 23, Constable Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai was tragically killed while performing his duties.
The situation surrounding the missing Kenyan officer exemplifies the escalating security challenges confronting peacekeeping missions in Haiti. Continuous efforts are being made to locate the officer and secure the area, amid a backdrop of violence against police personnel. This incident raises serious concerns regarding the safety of international forces involved in maintaining peace and order in Haiti.
