Kayoola: Uganda’s Electric Bus Innovating the African Automotive Industry

Kiira Motors Corporation, founded in 2014 in Uganda, is pioneering the African automotive industry with its Kayoola electric bus, which has garnered international orders. The company aims to manufacture all vehicle parts locally but currently imports many components.

In 2007, a group of students and professors from a Ugandan university embarked on a mission to produce the first car in Uganda. With the backing of the government, their efforts culminated in the founding of Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC) in 2014. Over a decade later, KMC has established itself as a significant player in Africa’s automotive industry with several vehicles in production.

Among its notable creations is the Kayoola electric bus, which is currently operational in Uganda. This innovative vehicle has gained interest beyond Uganda, securing orders from countries including Tanzania, eSwatini, Nigeria, and South Africa. Despite KMC’s ambition to manufacture all vehicle components domestically, the company presently relies on importing numerous parts.

Kiira Motors Corporation, established with university support, has become a prominent actor in Africa’s automotive sector, notably with its Kayoola electric bus. While expanding its manufacturing capabilities, KMC continues to import many components, highlighting a gradual but significant evolution in Uganda’s automotive landscape.
