Ethiopia Introduces 100 Electric Buses in Addis Ababa

Ethiopia has introduced 100 electric buses in Addis Ababa to enhance sustainable public transportation. Assembled locally with imported components, these buses feature advanced transportation technologies and operate on new BRT routes. The initiative supports a transition towards electric mobility, aiming to significantly reduce fuel-powered vehicles in the country.

The Addis Ababa City Administration has launched a fleet of 100 electric buses, signifying a crucial advancement in the promotion of electric transportation throughout Ethiopia. These buses, assembled at the Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex with components sourced from China, incorporate an advanced Intelligent Transportation System and Fare Collection System to facilitate efficient operations.

These electric buses have commenced service on the new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes, enhancing transit options for the residents of Addis Ababa. They are designed to be environmentally sustainable, offering zero emissions and a comfortable commuting experience, as highlighted by Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics Alemu Sime.

Minister Sime emphasized that the buses will utilize dedicated lanes, which will expedite travel times for passengers. This initiative aims to address the current deficiencies in public transportation in the city while providing a superior, efficient, and sustainable mode of transit.

According to the Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics, more than 100,000 electric vehicles currently operate within the country, with a goal of expanding this figure to 500,000 over the next decade. This effort is part of an ambitious plan to transition from fuel-powered to electric vehicles, targeting a 95% reduction in traditional vehicle usage.

To further facilitate this transition, the Ethiopian government enacted a ban on the importation of gasoline and diesel vehicles early last year, a measure taken in response to the rising global fuel prices.

The introduction of 100 electric buses in Addis Ababa represents a significant commitment to sustainable transportation in Ethiopia.
