Ethiopia Launches 100 Electric Buses to Promote Sustainable Transport
The Addis Ababa City Administration has launched 100 electric buses to promote electric mobility in Ethiopia. Assembled locally with components from China, these buses feature advanced technologies and operate on a new transit route. This initiative aims to improve public transport, reduce emissions, and transition towards a sustainable vehicle fleet.
The Addis Ababa City Administration has deployed 100 electric buses in Ethiopia’s capital, aiming to foster electric mobility. This initiative is in response to the growing need for sustainable transportation in the region. The buses were assembled by Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex with components sourced from China, featuring advanced technologies such as an Intelligent Transportation System and a Fare Collection System.
These electric buses have commenced operations along the newly established Bus Rapid Transit route, enhancing the commuting experience for city residents. Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, emphasized their role in improving the public transport network, highlighting the benefits of zero emissions and increased passenger capacity.
Furthermore, the use of dedicated bus lanes will allow for quicker travel times, addressing the public transportation shortage in Addis Ababa. The initiative is aligned with the Ethiopian government’s broader strategy to replace conventional fuel-powered vehicles, with a target of 500,000 electric vehicles in the next decade, up from the current 100,000 on the roads.
In line with this vision, the government has also enforced a ban on importing gasoline and diesel vehicles to accelerate the transition towards electric mobility amid rising global fuel prices. This reflects Ethiopia’s commitment to sustainable transportation solutions for its citizens.
The introduction of 100 electric buses in Addis Ababa marks a significant step towards promoting sustainable transportation in Ethiopia. With their advanced technology and environmental benefits, these buses are set to enhance the public transport landscape, reduce emissions, and improve commuting efficiency in the capital city. Ethiopia’s ambitious goals to increase electric vehicle usage further underline its commitment to sustainability and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
