Ethiopia Launches 100 Electric Buses to Transform Public Transport

The Addis Ababa City Administration has launched 100 electric buses to enhance public transport and promote electric mobility. Assembled locally with Chinese components, the buses feature advanced technologies and operate on the new Bus Rapid Transit route. The Addis Ababa City Administration has launched 100 electric buses to promote electric mobility within Ethiopia’s capital. The buses, assembled by Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex with imported components from China, feature advanced technologies such as an Integrated Intelligent Transportation System and a Fare Collection System. They have commenced operations on the Bus Rapid Transit route, providing convenient transport to residents.

These environmentally friendly electric buses produce zero emissions and are designed to offer a comfortable commuting experience with ample passenger capacity. According to Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics Alemu Sime, the buses will utilize dedicated lanes for quicker transit, addressing the public transportation shortages in Addis Ababa, while enhancing comfort, efficiency, and sustainability.

Currently, Ethiopia has over 100,000 electric vehicles and aims to increase this count to 500,000 within the next ten years, prioritizing the replacement of 95 percent of fuel-powered vehicles. To facilitate this transition, the government has enacted a ban on the importation of gasoline and diesel vehicles, a decision made in response to rising global fuel prices.
