Humanitarian Crisis in Eastern DRC: A Struggle Against Hunger and Displacement

The ongoing humanitarian crisis in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has led to heightened food insecurity, affecting millions of individuals. Displaced residents such as Linda and Safi struggle to rebuild their lives amid destruction, with support from the World Food Programme being essential. Linda L. has returned to her home in Bweremana, North Kivu province, only to find devastation where her livelihood once flourished. She is confronted with a field overrun by weeds and a roof riddled with holes, having lost her possessions to looting amid ongoing conflict. Recently receiving assistance from the World Food Programme (WFP), she stated, “I have to start again,” reflecting on the challenging prospect ahead.

The humanitarian crisis in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has escalated, with over five million people displaced due to conflict. Many are relocating back to their shattered homes after prolonged periods of instability and makeshift living conditions. Peace remains elusive in this region, with significant food insecurity affecting over 10 million people, a number that has risen markedly due to renewed violence since December.

Eric Perdison, WFP’s Regional Director for Southern Africa, emphasized the rapid deterioration of the humanitarian situation, noting that families already struggling with food access now face exacerbated dire conditions. Despite a funding gap affecting WFP’s reach, efforts continue to deliver food assistance to over 700,000 individuals this year. Perdison remarked, “We urgently need more resources.”

The challenges of alleviating hunger in DRC are manifold, compounded by rising prices of basic staples, closure of banks, and rampant inflation. For individuals like Linda, the WFP support is critical. “This is helping us combat hunger, while we wait for our harvests from farming,” she noted, underscoring the necessity of assistance amid shortages.

Upon fleeing last year due to escalated fighting, Linda left her home with very few possessions, returning now to an empty house. She faces substantial struggles in rebuilding her life. Meanwhile, Wilfred Nkwambi, WFP Goma Office Head, specified that delivering aid requires security and access, which is severely hindered by the presence of various non-state armed groups, complicating humanitarian efforts.

Safi, another affected mother, returned to find her home destroyed and is grappling with the absence of her soldier husband, who has been missing for months. Living with her mother, she strives to support her family through her work as a hairdresser. Safi emphasized the essential nature of WFP food aid: “It helps us fight hunger at home, because we don’t have a job to rely on most of the time.”

WFP’s response is bolstered by support from multiple donors, including Belgium, Canada, Denmark, the European Union, Germany, Japan, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, UNCERF, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Stop Hunger Foundation.
