Maryland Father Wrongfully Deported: Wife Speaks Out for His Safety
Kilmar Abrego Garcia was mistakenly deported to El Salvador, leaving his wife Jennifer Vasquez Sura worried for his safety. Despite having protected status, he ended up in a notorious prison. His wife emphasized that he is not a criminal and described her fears regarding the misinformation and treatment surrounding his deportation.
The spouse of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland father mistakenly deported to El Salvador, has publicly expressed her concerns regarding his safety while he is imprisoned in a notorious facility. Jennifer Vasquez Sura appeared on CBS Mornings, disclosing her fears as her husband was deported on March 15 despite his valid protected status, which was awarded in 2019. “I’ve seen news of that prison, and I know they take criminals there. And my husband’s not a criminal,” she asserted.
Vasquez Sura lost contact with Abrego Garcia after his arrest by ICE agents on March 12. She discovered his deportation when recognizing him in a photograph of detainees. “When I saw it, I immediately broke down because I knew it was him,” she lamented, expressing her fears for his life. The couple has a 5-year-old son with disabilities, whom she described as an “amazing person” and “an amazing father”.
Despite entering the U.S. without documentation as a teenager in 2011, Abrego Garcia was later granted a protected status due to potential gang persecution in El Salvador. Although he faced some traffic violations, he had no criminal record in the United States, as reported by CBS Mornings.
The Trump administration recognized the deportation mistake but claims jurisdiction over his return rests with the Salvadoran authorities. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt controversially referred to Abrego Garcia as a gang leader linked to MS-13, alleging involvement in human trafficking, though no substantial evidence supported these claims, with allegations described by his attorney as “based on hearsay”.
Abrego Garcia was detained in Texas after being stopped by ICE, where he was misinformed about his immigration status. He has been unable to communicate with his family since March 15, an experience that left Vasquez Sura anxiously waiting for his call. “I waited and waited,” she recounted, “He never made that call.”
The plight of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, as expressed by his wife Jennifer Vasquez Sura, underscores serious concerns about immigration enforcement practices and the potential impact of bureaucratic errors. The couple’s situation reveals the harsh realities of deportation laws and highlights the need for transparent communication from immigration authorities. As challenges in family reunification persist, attention remains crucial to protect vulnerable individuals, especially those with legitimate claims to legal status.
