Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate from the Labour Party, asserts that Nigeria is not functioning as a democracy. During an appearance on Arise TV’s Prime Time show, he expressed that Nigeria fails to meet foundational democratic principles. Obi stated, “I have said it, and I maintain that there is no democracy in Nigeria today,” emphasizing a lack of basic democratic features in the country.

Obi elaborated on democracy, stating, “Democracy is government of the people, by the people, and for the people.” He criticized the current government, claiming it is neither representative of the people’s will nor accountable to them, citing that people’s votes have not been valued. He underscored this point by referencing various elections, including the situation in Edo.

Furthermore, Obi highlighted that the government does not operate for the benefit of the populace, sharing his experience visiting a camp for displaced individuals who lack essential healthcare services. He committed to provide support, including nurses and schools, as these basic needs remain unmet.

Obi expressed his discontent with the government’s priorities, asserting, “How can a country spend N21 billion renovating a house for the vice-president who doesn’t even live there?” This comment exemplifies his critique of governmental spending on non-essential projects while ignoring critical infrastructure for education and health.

Additionally, he addressed President Tinubu’s actions, including declaring a state of emergency in Rivers and suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, which he viewed as further evidence of failures in governance.
