Ahmed Mohammed Lawal, a painter accused of stealing electrical cables from the Bank of Ghana building, has been granted GH¢1 million bail. The case will continue on May 7, 2025, with charges of unlawful entry and theft of cables valued at over GH¢1 million. Prosecution detailed the investigation and evidence leading to Lawal’s arrest.
An Accra Circuit Court granted bail to Ahmed Mohammed Lawal, a painter accused of stealing electrical cables from the Bank of Ghana building at Ridge. His bail is set at GH¢1 million, requiring two sureties. The presiding judge, Mr. Isaac Addo, instructed the prosecution to adhere to disclosure regulations, and the case has been adjourned to May 7, 2025.
Lawal faces charges of unlawful entry and theft of electrical cables valued at GH¢1,035,500, which he has denied. The prosecution, represented by Assistant Superintendent of Police Agustin Kingsley Oppong, reported that the complainants, a safety officer and an electrical engineer, discovered the theft at the construction site on February 16, 2025.
Upon reviewing the CCTV footage, the prosecution confirmed that Lawal, along with two accomplices, was observed stealing copper cables from the Energy Farm on-site. The complainants apprehended Lawal and turned him over to the authorities. Investigations revealed that the accused gained access to the Energy Farm via a scaffold, cutting and removing the cables.
Furthermore, it was determined that Lawal sold the stolen cables to an individual at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, obtaining GH¢2,000 for his share. Lawal has not assisted police in locating his accomplices or the alleged receiver of the stolen goods.
In summary, Ahmed Mohammed Lawal, accused of stealing cables worth over GH¢1 million from the Bank of Ghana, has been granted bail pending trial. His case illustrates the legal process following theft allegations, including investigation, evidence collection through CCTV footage, and subsequent court proceedings. The case is scheduled for further hearing in May 2025.
